Queen Hippolyta & Horse Deluxe Set Maker: Mattel Includes: Doll & horse with accessories Price: $29.97 MSRP I’d passed on this set because I want the Black Label Collectible version coming out later instead but my daughter returned a duplicate Moana doll gift at Walmart and picked this as her replacement. Queen Hippolyta is played by Connie Nielsen, whom I adore, but suffers the difficulty of having a stunning face comprised of both strong and delicate features and prominent angles. Her facial mold tries to capture all this but ends up offering a long face that’s too wide still and a hint of Connie. Knowing what she looks like, I know they tried but the Black Label version is much better. Her hair is a blonde version of Battle Ready Wonder Woman, which also detracts from the likeness, as in the movie it hangs wavy straight down her back. Queen Hippolyta comes with a screen-printed armor dress, plastic headband, armband, gauntlets, shoulders, breastplate, belt and boots as well as her sword and shield. The shield and sword have lovely details stamped into them and her sword is different from Wonder Woman’s. Again, the plastic armor is cut too loose, while the shield won’t stay on unless you twist it a certain way to slide over the wrist and gauntlet. The one-piece screen print, while detailed, isn’t as striking because you have no depth for the layers imprinted. She does stand on her own. The horse is basic. It stands, has a simple plastic light tan saddle, gold chest piece and bridle, but no reins, so I guess Hippolyta steers with her legs. The horse’s hair is very blonde and curly, with no color distinction between hooves and body. Expected way more for the price. Conclusion
Overpriced for what you get. The doll is more in line with the $15 versions than $20 and the horse isn’t worth much at all. I’m tempted to put the accessories from it on one of my old walking horses for better play. It you want your kid to have one for play they can “destroy”, this is the one. But for the same price you can get the Black Label version sans horse and have a much better representation of Hippolyta. Both armor pieces are made from a soft molded plastic, like rubber, and stained an antique gold. They attach using long pieces of black Velcro which means it fits my 5yr old and me! Battle Action Sword: There’s a reason this says for 6+ years, it is LONG! At least 2 feet or more of sword then another 8-10” for the handle. The attention to detail is evident in the writing on the sword, the dragon faces and coils on the handle. The six battle sounds are loud and distinctly unique; one was hitting a sword, swinging through the air, striking a shield, etc. Pretty badass! Conclusion
Both these dress-up, pretend play accessory sets are totally worth the money! While we haven’t bought the sword yet, it’s on the list for sure. I’m hoping her shield and gauntlet’s get made or released also we can have achieve the full super hero look. After all, Wonder Woman’s “accessories” are armor baby, and they are powerful! B) Gal Gadot was the ONLY good thing to come out of BvsS and C) the merchandise looks good for once! Mattel didn’t miss a chance to capitalize on multiple outfits and characters from the movie and worked out a lot of potential issues beforehand. Firstly, this goes for all the Wonder Woman dolls: her body sculpt and facial mold are awesome!! Wonder Woman has muscles, her shoulders/arms are jacked, she has thighs, and she's articulated at the knees/elbows/wrists/neck/shoulders/waist, plus molded underwear…all this without losing her femininity or beauty. Her body sculpt is strong but not mannish; she ain’t a ken doll in drag ok? She’s a trim, toned, warrior and her body matches that description; it’s one I’d happy to have my daughters play with. The facial mold does look like Gal Gadot; Mattel didn’t just stick some stock head on her like Belle. She has thick strong brows, a face that wasn’t overly thinned, wide eyes and almost no makeup. The one thing I found slightly detracting was the too pale lips. A touch redder on Wonder Woman would have made the face stronger and played off her luscious soft brown hair. ‘Battle Ready’ Wonder Woman comes with a screen-printed armor dress, plastic headband, armband, gauntlets, armor top, belt and boots as well as a coiled lasso of truth. The lasso doesn’t fit her hand well and easily slips out. The armband and gauntlets were cut a tad too wide for removal, meaning it’s easy for them to slip around and off. Not a fan of the screen print because I think it looks cheap and the belt sits too low, but for the price point I expected some cuts. The boots are great and she does stand on her own; feet are pointed inside by the way. ‘Hidden Sword’ Diana Prince is so pretty. Her dress, shoes and up do match the movie exactly, and while the dress fabric is thin and cheap, it’s a beautiful blue and gracefully draped across the doll. Her cleavage is minimal and the sword sits on her back well without issue. I love that she CAN reach back with her arm to pull it out; it looks so cool to do! The facial mold for this doll differs in her parted lips which gives her a whole different expression; one of innocence, curiosity and trust. Remember, Wonder Woman’s driving force is love and this “look” captures that. Conclusion
Both these dolls are well worth the money and welcome addition for doll play or collection. The lack of shield, shield and plastic armor can easily be solved by upgrading to the ‘Shield Block’ version at $19.99, but I dislike the block “peg” built into the doll’s back. Getting both dolls does give you a sword though and a non-battle look to switch into. Very happy my daughter has these and I love seeing her have Wonder Woman kick butt! Moana is very much a hit in our household still, which led me to finally get back to purchasing more of the Funko Mystery Minis; I purchased Oar Moana (Walmart exclusive) and both toddler Moana versions on eBay. The others I was hunting for were: Gramma Tala, Maui, & HeiHei (regular), Voyager Moana, Maui w/hook & Moana (Hot Topic exclusives), Wave Moana and as many of Tamatoa I could find (Walmart exclusives). To my horror, none of my Walmart’s EVER got the minis, or had any left, and GameStop & Hot Topic cost so much and were out, with the same for Barnes and Noble. Luckily, Walmart was selling them online for $3.96 originally, and since I have a trick I use for mystery minis, I ordered 12 hoping for a case. Naturally, Walmart ship my first batch, and all the subsequent shipments, as loose boxes, thus leaving me to sort them out with…my scale! This method is one I tried out on the My Little Pony Series 3 mystery minis, which was so accurate I never got the wrong figure and sold enough online in the early days to pay myself back for the ones I kept and sold. THAT’S HOW GOOD THIS TRICK CAN BE. To improve your chances, you want to use a food scale that shows at least 2 decimals points out in ounces. I borrow my mom’s Ozeri Pronto Digital Multifunction Kitchen and Food Scale. First, I weighed the three figures in bag in box. None had the original plastic covering the box but once I bought my 4th, I reweighed them with the plastic. With my first order of 20 minis from Walmart, I took home 7 of the heaviest. I ended up with: 1 Tamatoa, 3 Maui, 1 Wave Moana and 1 each of Hawk and Shark Maui. Happy to have 3 I wanted, I also ended up knowing 3 more weights and the spare Maui(s) went to friends while Hawk and Shark were game prizes at my daughter’s birthday. I’ve listed a few figures have the same weights, like sitting Pua and standing Toddler Moana, so utilize a squeeze and shake if you need more help. Here come the numbers: Gramma Tala = 1.94oz HeiHei = 1.16oz Kakamora = 1.66oz Maui = 3.10 OR 3.14 Maui Hawk = 2.82oz Maui Shark = 1.69oz OR 1.73oz Moana (Hot Topic) = 1.94oz Moana Oar = 1.87oz OR 1.90oz Moana Oar2 (Walmart) = 1.98oz OR 2.08oz Moana Wave (Walmart) = 2.19oz Pua Sitting = 1.27oz Pua Standing = 1.23oz Tamatoa (Walmart) = 2.93oz OR 2.96oz Toddler Moana Sitting = 1.34oz Toddler Moana Standing = 1.27oz Note, I don’t have the other Kakamora weight(s) simply because I don’t want the figures, but if you get them, you can always let me know what they were. Enjoy hunting!
This was meant to be the second post regarding Funko Mystery Minis but since I have yet to triple-confirm the Moana mini weights, I’m posting my pony ones!
This method is one I worked out with the My Little Pony Series 3 mystery minis, and was so accurate I never got the wrong figure and sold enough online in the early days to pay myself back for the ones I kept and sold. THAT’S HOW GOOD THIS SYSTEM CAN BE. To improve your chances, you want to use a food scale that shows at least 2 decimals points out in ounces. I borrow my mom’s Ozeri Pronto Digital Multifunction Kitchen and Food Scale. Most have miniscule variations due to packaging but they are super close to each other and not that of another figure. Those with just one number came up that weight every single time. Since theses have been out awhile and are still in stock, enjoy using this system to get the figures you want! Here are the numbers: Apple Bloom = 1.95oz Cheese Sandwich = 2.19oz OR 2.22oz Maud Pie = 2.01oz OR 2.05oz Nightmare Moon = 2.29oz Princess Cadance = 2.54oz Princess Celestia = 3.21oz (heaviest) Princess Luna = 2.72oz Queen Chrysalis = 1.55oz Scootaloo = 1.84oz OR 1.87oz Shining Armor = 2.57oz OR 2.61oz Spike = 1.59oz OR 1.62 Sweetie Belle = 1.87oz OR 1.90oz Since I also have Dr. Whooves, Discord, Fluttershy, Trixie, Twilight Sparkle, and Derpy/Muffins, I will get their numbers soon! |
