Few weeks ago I bought G a small molded hair MLP set off eBay, which came with Princess Celestia (pink), Applejack, Pinkie Pie and Twilight Sparkle. Being one for show accurate toys, I knew there wasn’t anything I could do about Celestia being pink, but I was disappointed they didn’t even color her shoes. Having seen me correct damage to several Aladdin action figures, G asked if I would make her shoes gold and I agreed.

I used gold sharpie, which I learned wasn’t the best choice for this type of plastic, but more on that later. I’ve had great success with the gold sharpie on the Aladdin figures, and once sealed, it doesn’t bleed or fade, plus it’s the best antique gold. I wasn’t about to buy yellow acrylic paint just for Celestia, but luckily, the sharpie was a touch darker than her crown and G said it was ok.
Was trickier than anticipated, simply because some places were tight and the sharpie isn’t the fine point, but it came out looking good. I waited 24hrs before sealing it with glossy acrylic sealer, and waited another 24hrs before passing it back. Imagine my surprise when G brought it back not long after because the gold was rubbing and scratching off.
Perturbed, I corrected the missing spots and resealed, using more than before. Let her dry longer and still it’s not taking. I think it’s because of the previous sealer used that’s preventing the bonding process, so once the current gold is gone, I’m going to try sanding it and using a touch of rubbing alcohol or paint thinner to strip off the finish before trying a 3rd time.
