Moana is very much a hit in our household still, which led me to finally get back to purchasing more of the Funko Mystery Minis; I purchased Oar Moana (Walmart exclusive) and both toddler Moana versions on eBay. The others I was hunting for were: Gramma Tala, Maui, & HeiHei (regular), Voyager Moana, Maui w/hook & Moana (Hot Topic exclusives), Wave Moana and as many of Tamatoa I could find (Walmart exclusives).
To my horror, none of my Walmart’s EVER got the minis, or had any left, and GameStop & Hot Topic cost so much and were out, with the same for Barnes and Noble. Luckily, Walmart was selling them online for $3.96 originally, and since I have a trick I use for mystery minis, I ordered 12 hoping for a case. Naturally, Walmart ship my first batch, and all the subsequent shipments, as loose boxes, thus leaving me to sort them out with…my scale!
This method is one I tried out on the My Little Pony Series 3 mystery minis, which was so accurate I never got the wrong figure and sold enough online in the early days to pay myself back for the ones I kept and sold. THAT’S HOW GOOD THIS TRICK CAN BE. To improve your chances, you want to use a food scale that shows at least 2 decimals points out in ounces. I borrow my mom’s Ozeri Pronto Digital Multifunction Kitchen and Food Scale.
First, I weighed the three figures in bag in box. None had the original plastic covering the box but once I bought my 4th, I reweighed them with the plastic. With my first order of 20 minis from Walmart, I took home 7 of the heaviest. I ended up with: 1 Tamatoa, 3 Maui, 1 Wave Moana and 1 each of Hawk and Shark Maui. Happy to have 3 I wanted, I also ended up knowing 3 more weights and the spare Maui(s) went to friends while Hawk and Shark were game prizes at my daughter’s birthday.
I’ve listed a few figures have the same weights, like sitting Pua and standing Toddler Moana, so utilize a squeeze and shake if you need more help. Here come the numbers:
